Combat range check not taking height into account?

Tested at Norsca chapter 1 PQ. I'm standing above where the champion demon has spawned on the spikes surrounding the pit. I can melee AA the demon (Mara has no working normal melee ability) and it can hit me back with its melee ability even though there's a massive gap between us vertically.
