ILLUSTRATED HOW TO FETCH DATA FROM DEFUNCT ZAM WARHAMMER WEBSITE

Hello,

As of today it's still possible to obtain information about Warhammer from cached backups.

It's not going to be quick or easy and I don't know for how long that info will be kept so it's urgent to take as much of it as possible and fast!

I know there's also the possibility to find the archived version of the same website but it's slow and misses a number of pages.

Illustrated walkthrough

Basically, go to Google and enter this:

warhammer zam dark elf chapter 1

where "warhammer zam" are fixed and then comes the real search string "dark elf chapter 1"

It will find the relevant page that... points to a dead link. But you can go to the right of the link and press the "arrow down". It'll show options including "Cached". Right click and open in a new tab.
See the text in the page? They are candidates for the next search.

Example:

warhammer zam dark elf chapter 1

leads to:

From that, there are many exact strings. Let's take i.e.

The Blighted Isle

The link address contains: WAR_Zone:The_Blighted_Isle

That's a very exact search string we can use in a next step:

It will bring us to this page:

Thanks to Javascript "magic", the various tabs still work! Let's press "Destruction Quests Started".

Let's imagine we want to grab the "Dance of Khaine" quest info, text and data.

Dance of Khaine

The URL contains:

warquest=42004

So we Google once again:

warhammer zam warquest=42004

Result:

As you can see, we get a text we can copy and paste and even the players submitted notes!

I hope this tutorial will be of help restoring Warhammer to its glory!

you can also use the command "site:allakhazam.com" - i.e. "Blighted Isle site:allakhazam.com" - to secure that you only get results from allakhazam.com (or "[search topic] site:war.allakhazam.com" if you want to pinpoint it even more).

And simply doing a "site:war.allakhazam.com" in google gives you all WAR related material from that site - which amounts to approximately 161k results...

You can also check out http://archive.org/web/. I put in "http://war.allakhazam.com/db/zone.html?warzone=200" and was able to get the page back from March of 2012. Not the most recent but better than nothing. If you play with wget you can have it download the site locally which may make it easier to grab the data.
