Career balance, and how it's handled...

Postby Bruglir » 22 December 2013, 01:18

Are the current dev team looking to, or willing to take on some of the more experienced players to help focus on career balance once things are up and running? there are a lot of people who will want to, or think they are qualified to do the job, but in all honesty i can count maybe 6 people from my past experiences who are objective enough to take the role seriously, and be impartial toward any career for the good of the game.

So i guess my question is - how are the dev team looking to handle this?

This would also depend on how the classes worked in the retail version of the game.

Say like tanks: BG being an aggressive tank, Chosen having great group utility and CC, Black Orcs having LBD skills and good dmg, just to take the Destro side of things, which I am the most familiar with.

It might be a good way to set up pools as to some of the concepts people have in mind on a later note?

I think they should just leave all classes like they were in the version the server is useing.

career balance is pretty much impossible. most grps are 2-2-2 usually. but u have 3 tanks for 2 spots, 6 dps for 2 spots and 3 healers for 2 spots. all u can achieve is switch the "balance" so for example instead of chosen people would rather ask for BG.

every class also affect other classes. some more some less. (for example triple shatter make every target healed by shamy sad, aoe cleanse hurt pretty much every class reliable on dots or debuffs...)

some mechanics are useless - AM/shamy. some looks a bit OP - bw/sorc (atleast that negative effect kinda loosing negative effect outside of solo).

some classes just do not have proper place in grp - engi/magus as mix of survivability, dps, CC and support (like dps tanks without guard and challenge or one trick rift/magnet pony loved by enemies for stagger immunity).

I think I have read only solid suggestion on forums that were about making AM/shamy mechanic actually benefit heal spec or dps spec, mirror shamy hot and AM channeled heal; give WP/dok solid SE/RF regen in cost of armor and decrease "power" of grp cleanse tactic by increasing cooldown of cleanse; make SM/BO true off tanks by giving them 9+1 or core kd and some unique dps enhance abilities.

mythic was able to always screw up the balance or completely ignore issues so I do not have hope for any balance patch. same for this server. every change for 1 class affect the others so I would rather avoid any balance. maybe some little tweaks here and there but not any large scale nerfs and buffs or new abilities

I would say class balance is something that shouldn't even be considered until all abilities in the game perform as they are supposed to, otherwise you end up making changes when they are bugs, and when those bugs become fixed the changes you made create poor balance.

I completely agree, i wasn't saying jump on it now, i was asking how it would be handled once everything is working correctly.

Imo the devs should start with "copied" skills from the retail game and only then start rebalancing them.

Rebalancing is an awful job. I.e. bw/sorcs started as extremely OP but the last months were just a wasted spot.
On December 2013 I did not get killed by a BW once, I did not even need to care for them any more as there's always a spam cleanser nearby. Top damage I got by a BW in December is 2250 damage. That is a class able to deal > 12.5k damage ends up dealing 2250.
My class and spec and gear would let me potentially deal > 13.5k damage in a rotation but usually the target would get 3-3.5k. Useless.

In trade for such "OP" mechanic that ends up cashing in 2250-3500 damage per about 12s of casting :!: casters are unable to solo PvP and can't even farm mats etc.
To the point that to grind LoTD mats I logged off my supposedly RR100 "king of AoE" class and logged on a RR100 choppa. Choppa would AoE grind 3 times as fast and would not even notice if an elite or 3 added into the mix, whereas the sorc would possibly die to 1.

1. make everything to work as intended
2. implement statistics in the server that monitors sustained damage, bursts, max hits, migration/reduction/avoidance, heals, kills* (log during low server load).

Then ...

3. target the weakest of each archetype
4. run proposed changes by the community
5. most importantly make small incremental changes to 1 or 2 powers at a time. Not big sweeping bug prone rewrite everything patches

This is something the devs never figured out

Sorcs performed quite well in SCs/WBs (pref AOE ones) and open PUG RvR. Not so in 6-man roams or solo except from a few exceptional BWs/Sorcs that shined.

Why balance anything around AOE grind?
